Situated on the Caribbean coast of the Dominican Republic, you’ll find the
Larimar Wind Project — a shining example of sustainable energy innovation in the Barahona Province.
This pioneering wind energy project consists of 29 state-of-the-art Vestas wind turbines. Each turbine, with a formidable capacity ranging from 3.3 to 3.45 megawatts, harnesses the power of the Caribbean trade winds to generate clean and renewable electricity.
Advantages: Climate & Environment
The Larimar Project is crucial in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions associated with power production. Its emission factor, calculated at 0.7173 tCO2e per megawatt of power generated, signifies a significant reduction in environmental impact compared to traditional fossil fuel power production methods. Without implementing the Larimar Project, the county’s fossil fuel power production facilities would release 0.7173 tCO2e for every megawatt of power produced.
Since its initiation in August 2016, the Larimar Project has contributed to an estimated annual emissions savings of 177 thousand tonnes of CO2e. This remarkable achievement not only showcases the project’s commitment to sustainability but also underscores the positive impact it has had on the local and global environment.
Advantages: Social & Economic
The impact of this project extends far beyond its immediate objectives, bringing about positive changes in the local community and fostering the development of various initiatives. One of the key contributions lies in the financial support provided for the power consumed by the irrigation pumps of local producers. By covering these essential costs, the project ensures the sustainability of agricultural practices and bolsters farmers’ economic well-being, creating a ripple effect that resonates throughout the community.
In addition to its economic impact, the project strongly emphasises community engagement and collaboration. Through strategic partnerships with local schools, it actively participates in educational endeavours that empower the youth and enhance the overall learning environment.
Furthermore, the project allocates funds to ‘Income Generation’ training schemes tailored for the local population. These initiatives provide individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to explore entrepreneurial opportunities, thereby promoting economic self-sufficiency and contributing to the community’s overall prosperity.
Project Verification
The associated carbon credits were verified under the Verified Carbon Standard by an approved third-party auditor, the Colombian Institute for Technical Standards and Certification (ICONTEC).
