A two-phase project with one ambitious goal
Larimar was built in two major phases, representing a combined investment of US$220 million by EGE Haina.
Phase I (Commissioned in 2016 and inaugurated in March 2016)
- 15 Vestas V 112 turbines

Phase II (Commissioned in 2018 and inaugurated in December 2018)
- 14 Vestas V 117 turbines, each 150 metres tall
- Capacity of 3.45 MW each
- Total installed capacity of 48.3 MW
Together, these 29 turbines harness the region’s strong and consistent wind resources to significantly reduce the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Larimar delivers measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions
Electricity generation in the Dominican Republic has traditionally relied heavily on fossil fuels. Without renewable projects such as Larimar, each megawatt hour (MWh) generated for the national grid would typically result in around 0.7173 tCO₂e of emissions. By producing clean wind energy, the Larimar Project prevents these emissions from entering the atmosphere.
The project’s crediting period runs from August 2016 to July 2026. The most recent verification report (November 2024) confirmed that the project avoided 441,100 tonnes of CO₂e between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2023. This verification demonstrates that Larimar is delivering the climate benefits it was designed to achieve.
By displacing fossil fuel generation, the project also prevents the release of harmful pollutants such as sulphur oxides (SOₓ), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter. The result is cleaner air, lower environmental health risks and meaningful progress towards national climate commitments under the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.
Larimar provides long-term support to local communities
The Larimar Wind Project is also notable for its commitment to social development. EGE Haina has invested more than US$5 million in initiatives that benefit 12 local communities in the surrounding area. Examples of these community benefits include:
